Why Minhaj-uI-Quran?

There are so many groups and organizations existing in the world today that one may well ask the question “Which one to follow and to be associated with?” This is by no means an unreasonable question! So, why Minhaj-ul-Quran and what one can hope to achieve by associating with it? There are four notable characteristics of Minhaj-ul-Quran which will benefit societies, both Muslim and non-Muslim, in a way other organizations may not:

  1. The comprehensiveness of its message
  2. The purity of its message and basis in traditional scholarship
  3. Its emphasis on the revival of spiritual values and selfpurification
  4. Its emphasis on promoting peace and mutual respect and tolerance between different faiths, cultures and societies.

The setback with most groups and organizations working for Islam today is that their scope is not comprehensive and their objectives are generally restricted. We can also see that the guidelines of certain institutions were formulated decades ago and they have just been blindly following them, without any thought given to modern requirements. Some organizations put all their efforts into research, some emphasize on just obligatory ammaal, yet others solely into spiritual purification. There are others that are only interested in working towards gaining political power. Most of them in general, because of their limited, rigid and inflexible approach, are limited in their scope and objectives. They are usually just interested in promoting their narrow agendas, philosophies or methodologies. Generally, they have not been very successful in promoting comprehensiveness and intrinsic inclusiveness of the message of Islam. They have also usually been unable to cooperate with other Islamic groups, let alone non-Islamic organizations that may be working for good and for positive change. However, Minhaj ul-Quran has a proven track record of promoting the true comprehensive message of Islam, inviting all sects and groups, and cooperating with different organizations, both Muslims and nonMuslims, towards the common good. This has been resulting in promotion of true values and spirit of Islam to the world.

The decline of Muslim civilization came about between two and three centuries ago. Before this time the spirit and outward manifestation of Islam existed in the minds and actions of the people, leading to a civilization of great richness, diversity, tolerance, scholarship, enlightenment and economic and political influence. Although problems did appear from time to time, there would arise a leader, reformer or movement to eliminate them. Depending on their particular area of expertise, these eminent persons would work towards reviving spiritual or moral values, or reviving knowledge and scholarship, or other areas of Deen (consisting of the allencompassing domains of religious and human life). This may have taken days or even years, but the problem would eventually be terminated at the root level. Today Minhaj-ul-Quran is working on the same lines and has been consistently trying to effectively deal with the challenges being faced by Muslims today and trying to revive the image of Muslims as a great nation.

Not only was the decline of the Muslim civilization inherently associated with the degradation of spiritual character and moral values, it was also associated with major changes in the educational system. Once institutions became bifurcated, the value of specialist subjects, such as the natural sciences, was not appreciated in religious circles and these teachings were gradually separated from and made alien to Islam. The problem became such that the experts of the specialist subjects did not understand the scholars of Islam and vice-versa. For over twelve hundred years, institutions taught subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Philosophy, together with Qur’an, Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh and other Islamic teachings. Such institutions and educational system produced intellectual giants like Imam Ghazali, Farabi, Ibn Rushd and Ibn al-Hashim. But unfortunately, people who are nowadays brought up in Islamic madrassas are given limited religious education and have been detached from the affairs of the world, hence often they are limited to specific roles such as an Imams of the mosques who lead Jumu’ah, Janaza or other such religious events only. Yet there are also few groups who are directly or indirectly promoting the extremism due to their misinterpretation of Quran, hence spreading a very wrong and bad image of Islam and Muslims. In this environment, Minhaj-ul-Quran has been playing a very critical role of enhancing the respect and image of our scholars and Muslims. Minhaj-ul-Quran International University has yet again combined the specialist subjects with the Islamic subjects and hence producing great scholars who are well aware of the challenges of the world.

The founder of Minhaj-ul-Quran, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, are among few scholars of today who are of the highest ability and caliber, deep spiritual awareness, and great scholarship both ‘secular’ and ‘religious’, who are working tirelessly for the revival of spiritual and moral values, for the revival of educational systems and institutes, for the welfare and socio-economic betterment of the needy, for the promotion of peace and tolerance between different societies. Having established Minhaj-ul-Quran’s network in about 80 countries around the world, having delivered several thousand lectures on critical subjects, having written several hundred books on topics that are helping to eradicate misunderstandings and uniting Muslims, having conveyed the true peaceful message of Islam to the world, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri is one such great person whose practical examples and achievements are plain for everyone to see and none can deny.
